Puerto Rico

Autumn is the best time of year to visit the Caribbean, especially if you enjoy 140 mph winds and airborn palm trees. Fortunately, we missed this year’s hurricanes and we experienced pleasant weather all week. We stayed in San Juan, but made day trips about the island in search of adventure and good food. We ate at a lechoneria made famous in an episode of “No Reservations” – the roasted pork was good, but not great. Our best meal might have been at El Jefe Burger Shack at the Luquillo kioskos. Ever tried a 1/2 lb Angus burger stuffed with short ribs or chorizo? Damn good eats, especially when followed by an ice-cold Medalla Light. Just kidding on the beer – Medalla Light tastes like watered down Pacifico.

We took a ferry to the nearby island of Culebra, where we hiked and snorkeled at an isolated beach. I was lucky enough to find a large conch and a $20 bill. Back in San Juan, my luck ran out while playing blackjack at our hotel’s casino. We also visited El Yunque National Forest, where we hiked to a jungle watefall. And of course, we took a tour of the Bacardi Rum factory.
